2010 GLBUA Exam

Questions 1 – 25: True or False

1. No one on base. The pitcher starts and stops his windup. Umpire rules balk.

2. A balk causes the ball to become dead immediately.

3. Umpire interference causes the ball to become dead immediately.

4. A fielder throws his glove and makes contact with a thrown ball. The proper award is three bases.

5. The award of two bases is always governed by the runner’s position at the time of the throw.

6. In a batting out of order situation, it is always the proper batter who should be declared out.

7. Bases loaded, 3 – 1 count on the batter, the umpire calls a balk, but the pitcher continues to pitch. The pitch bounces in front of the plate, and is blocked and secured by the catcher. The umpire calls time and enforces the balk, by awarding R3 home, R2 3rd, R1 2nd and the batter stays at bat with a 3 – 1 count. Is he correct?

8. Runner on 1st stealing on the pitch, batter hits a ground ball to the 2nd basemen. 2nd basemen throw wildly to first and the ball goes out of play. At the time of the throw from the 2nd basemen, the runner from 1st had acquired 2nd base. The umpire awards R1 home and the BR 2nd base.

9. It is legal for the pitcher to throw to an unoccupied base if he is doing so to make
a play.

10. On a play at the plate, the catcher is in possession of the ball and waiting; the runner makes intentional contact causing the catcher to drop the ball. Umpire rules legal play, runner safe.

11. As the pitcher delivers the pitch, the right fielder is not on the playing field, the batter hits a homerun. Umpire allows the play.

12. No one on base and a batted ball strikes first base and bounces into the dugout.
Umpire points the ball fair and sends the batter runner to 2nd base.

13. The coach of Agawam decides to use 5 infielders and 2 outfielders. The umpire allows this.

14. While two runners are occupying the same base, the first runner should be called out when tagged.

15. Runner on first, one out, pitcher in the set position. Runner breaks for second. Pitcher on the rubber whirls, and throws to second. Runner retraces steps back to first. Umpire declares balk.

16. The visiting team is leading 4 – 3 after four and one half innings. The home team goes ahead 5 – 4 after one man is out. Before the inning is completed, rain washes out the game. Umpire rules that the game must be replayed.

17. Pitcher can use the dirt on the mound to rub up the baseball.

18. The batter triples but misses second base. The defense properly appeals that he missed first base, but the umpire rules him safe. The defense then properly appeals the runner missed 2nd base. Umpire rules runner out.

19. The batter is completely in the box with one foot completely in the box and the other foot on the line of the box.

20. Bases loaded, 2 out. The batter hits a grounder to the third basemen’s left. R2 stops and gets into a run – down and is tagged out after R3 touches home plate. Umpire allows the run to count.

21. A relief pitcher enters the game with 2 outs and a runner on first. Without delivering a single pitch, the pitcher successfully picks off R1, thus retiring the side. The manager now inserts a pinch-hitter for the reliever, who is due to lead off the next half-inning. Umpire allows this.

22. On a play at the plate, the runner and ball arrive at the same time. There is minimal and unintentional contact between the runner and the catcher and the runner is safe. Umpires rules legal play, runner safe.

23. A fair/foul fly ball is to be judged by its relative position to the foul line, not where the fielder is standing. A ball that is touched over fair territory, even though the fielder is in foul territory, is a fair ball.

24. The batter is out when the catcher drops a third strike with first base occupied and less then two outs.
